Body Language Lesson 03.2 (Common Hand Movements 02)

Common Hand Movements 02
  • Sales people are taught to watch for a customer's exposed palms.
  • Open palms represents honesty
  • Customer gives reasons or objections about why he can't buy a product 
  • Keeping hands in pockets means he or she don't want to talk.
  • Palm Up gesture represents for non threatening emotion to others.
  • Palm Down gesture gives authority and seriously emotion to others (Hitler's most common gesture)
  • The Palm-Closed-Finger-Pointed Gesture 
  1. Speakers use to give the feeling of submission to the listeners
  2. Gives a negative feeling to others(Listeners).
  3. Most annoying gestures anyone use while speaking
  4. In Malaysia and Philippines they think it as a insult and they use their thumb to point to people or to give directions.
  •  Scientists proves the success rates of speakers as follows
  • Using Palm-Up position          -   84% Positive
  • Using Palm-Down position     -   52% Positive
  •  Using Finger Pointed Gesture -    28% (Some had walked out)
  • Try to practice Palm-Up and Palm-Down positions during you speaking and it will create
  • More relaxed atmosphere.
  • More positive effect on others. 
  • if you squeeze your fingers against your thumb to make an 'OK' type of gesture and talk using this position, you'll come across as authoritative, but not aggressive.
  • The audiences who listened to the speakers who used the fingertip-touch gestures described those speakers as 'thoughtful', 'goal-oriented' and 'focused'.
  • Squeezing the thumb against the finger tips avoids intimidating the audience. 
  • Speaker who use Finger-Pointed position is
  1. Aggressive
  2. Belligerent
  3. Rude
  4. Lowest amount of information retain in audience
  5. When pointing directly at the audience, audience make judgments about the speaker rather than listening to his contents.
