  2. Body Language Lesson 02 (Introduction)

handshake is a globally widespread, brief greeting or parting tradition in which two people grasp one of each other's like hands, in most cases accompanied by a brief up-and-down movement of the grasped hands. Handshakes are sometimes used to signify romantic relationships.
Using the right hand is generally considered proper etiquette. Customs surrounding handshakes are specific to cultures. Different cultures may be more or less likely to shake hands, or there may be different customs about how or when to shake hands.
  • Hand shake is a sign of trust and welcome.
  • It is better to wait for other person to initiate the handshake and, if it is not forthcoming, use a small head-nod as a greeting.
  • There are three basic attitudes in hand shake.
  1. Dominance - "He is trying to dominate me. I'd better better be cautious"
  2. Submission - "I can dominate this person. He'll do what I want"
  3. Equality - " I feel comfortable with this person"

  • Women normally gives soft handshake in some social contexts to imply submissiveness.
  • In business woman don't need to act in a masculine way; She simply needs to avoid signals of femaleness such as soft handshakes, short skirts and high heels may help if she wants equal credibility.
  • Extroverted type people use firm handshakes while shy and neurotics don't.
  • Woman who are open to new ideas use firm handshakes.
  • Men use firm handshakes whether they were open to new ideas or not.
  • It makes good business sense for women to practice firmer handshaking, particularly with men.
  • Submissive handshake can use:-
-To give the other person to control you.
- To allow him to feel that he is in charge.
- When making an apology.

  • How to create rapport - Mainly two things to consider.
  1. Make sure that yours and the other person's palms are in vertical position (it means that no one is dominant or submissive)
  2. Apply the same pressure you receive.
(If you were meeting a group of  people, you'd probably need to make several adjustments of angle and intensity to create feeling.)
